Bitcoin Plunges Below $80k, Wipes Out $547M in Leveraged Positions
Bitcoin's recent rally came to an abrupt end on August 22 as the cryptocurrency slid nearly 3% from its peak near $79,500 to around $77,000. This move triggered a massive wave of forced liquidations totaling approximately $547 million in leveraged positions.
The pullback was particularly brutal for traders who had bet heavily on Bitcoin's continued upside, with many seeing their entire margins wiped out. In the perpetual futures market, traders often deploy leverage ratios between 50x and 100x, meaning a relatively small price move against their position can lead to total liquidation.
On decentralized exchange Hyperliquid, individual liquidation events ranged from $23 million to $48 million, with long positions dominating the overall numbers. This comes after a year of significant liquidation cascades, including multiple days where total liquidations exceeded $1 billion and some sessions recording north of $3 billion in forced closures.
The key metric to watch going forward is open interest relative to spot volumes. When this ratio climbs sharply, it signals the kind of leverage buildup that precedes these forced-selling episodes.
