Bitcoin Price Gap Widens to 1% Premium on Upbit Amid Kimchi Rebound
The Bitcoin price gap between Korean and global markets has widened, with Upbit trading at a 1% premium over Binance's dollar-denominated price. This marks the longest sustained positive spread since early May.
The 'kimchi premium' is a barometer of retail mood across Asia, reflecting demand imbalances that persist due to Korea's regulatory structure and capital controls.
Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, notes that Korean retail tends to buy aggressively in risk-on phases, causing price gaps rather than arbitrage flows. Markus Thielen, head of 10x Research, counters that Korea is unlikely to drive a Bitcoin rebound without corresponding spot volume increases.
The premium's reappearance has historical significance, with discount-to-premium crossings preceding stronger returns over the following weeks. However, it competes with US spot Bitcoin ETF demand, which pulled in $1.92 billion in the week of Aug. 17 and another $923 million the next week.
