Bitcoin Price Influenced by Global Liquidity, Not Just Crypto Market Forces

The price of Bitcoin can be influenced by global liquidity, which is the ease with which capital can be created, borrowed, transferred, and invested across the financial system. This is not a mechanical signal that tells investors whether BTC must rise or fall.

The Federal Reserve's policy plays a crucial role in shaping dollar liquidity. When the Fed cuts rates or eases financial conditions, borrowing costs fall, and investors have less incentive to remain in cash. Lower rates can also reduce yields on government bonds, making assets without a fixed yield, such as Bitcoin, relatively more attractive.

The relationship between global liquidity and Bitcoin's price was visible in 2026. In August, the U.S. Treasury announced that it would at least double the maximum size of liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated nominal Treasury securities, raising the maximum from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. Following this announcement, Bitcoin accelerated higher and eventually traded above $80,000 on August 25.

However, by September, stronger employment numbers revived expectations of Fed tightening, and geopolitical tensions pushed energy prices higher. Brent crude moved toward $100 per barrel, reaching about $99.49 on September 9. Higher oil prices can contribute to inflation, which may limit the room for central banks to cut rates.
