Bitcoin Price Reversal Triggers $433M in Liquidations
Bitcoin's price slipped back to around $84,600 on October 3 after reaching close to $87,100 earlier in the day. The reversal triggered a wave of liquidations across the crypto derivatives market, with over $433 million in forced closures in just 24 hours.
The majority of these liquidations were long positions, which absorbed roughly three-quarters of the losses. Longs are positions that profit when prices rise, and short positions profit when prices fall. When a rally fails, leveraged longs are the most exposed.
Open interest, or the total value of outstanding derivatives contracts, remains high relative to the price move. This suggests that another sharp move could trigger fresh margin calls before the October 27-28 Fed meeting.
