Bitcoin Price Surge Above $80,000 Reignites Debate Over Lasting Recovery
Bitcoin's price surge above $80,000 has sparked a debate over whether it is experiencing a lasting recovery or just another temporary bounce. Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy (MSTR), and Cathie Wood, founder of ARK Invest, have pushed back against the characterization of this rally as a 'dead cat bounce' by investor Jason Calacanis.
Calacanis claimed that Bitcoin has failed to find meaningful use cases and likened it to a laserdisc in the streaming era. However, Saylor countered that the asset's $1.6 trillion valuation represents something more significant: digital capital designed to preserve wealth across generations.
The debate unfolded against a backdrop of genuine price momentum, with Bitcoin climbing back above $80,000 on Friday, September 18. The cryptocurrency had fallen toward $75,000 earlier in the week due to macro shocks from the Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act and a quarter-point Federal Reserve rate hike.
The rebound was driven by renewed institutional demand, with U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds pulling in $433.03 million in net inflows on September 18. This marked a dramatic reversal from midweek, when Bitcoin ETFs bled $746.3 million in two days.
