Bitcoin Price Surges Amid Treasury-Fed Standoff Ahead of Warsh Speech
The Bitcoin price rallied over the past week, its best weekly gain since March 2023. The move came as the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve faced a standoff over long-term borrowing costs.
The tension began on August 19 when the Treasury announced it would at least double the maximum size of its buyback operations for longer-term government bonds, from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation.
However, the 30-year Treasury yield initially fell but then climbed back to 5.247% within 24 hours, marking its highest level since 2007. This raised doubts about whether the Treasury's buybacks were large enough to have a long-term impact on the bond market that supports more than $40 trillion in U.S. government debt.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is scheduled to give his first Jackson Hole keynote on Friday, August 28, at 10 a.m. ET. The speech will likely be closely watched for signals on interest rates, Treasury yields, and the Fed's policy outlook.
