Bitcoin Prices Surge as Traders Anticipate Fed Rate Hike Decision
The prices of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and XRP have climbed in recent days, with BTC approaching $78,000. This comes after a decline from its August peak near $81,500.
Traders are eyeing the Federal Reserve's decision at its September 16 meeting, with the odds of a 25 basis point hike sitting at 60.2%, according to CME FedWatch data. This would push the federal funds rate from 3.5% to 3.75%, up to a new range of 3.75% to 4%. A prediction market chart also shows 60.2% odds for a hike into the 375 to 400 range, against 39.8% for no change at all.
A rate hike would typically hurt crypto prices as it makes risky assets like Bitcoin look less attractive by comparison. Higher rates can strengthen the US dollar and tighten liquidity, making leveraged trading more expensive. Research from the IMF found that Fed tightening has historically weakened crypto prices through what's called the risk-taking channel.
