Bitcoin Rallies as Stock Market Winning Streak Ends Amid Treasury Volatility
The stock market's winning streak came to an end on Friday as major indexes declined despite a rally in Bitcoin. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 518 points, or about 1%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each gained 0.4%. However, these advances were insufficient to offset weekly losses across all three benchmarks.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq had been on a three-week winning streak before this week's decline. The market activity was subdued throughout Friday's afternoon session, with many traders apparently departing ahead of schedule due to the Labor Day weekend and the end of the summer season.
Treasury volatility weighed heavily on equity markets, with fluctuations in bond yields emerging as a primary catalyst for this week's instability. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to enhance the government's bond repurchase initiative beyond the current $4 billion per issue threshold. However, the optimism surrounding this announcement proved short-lived, and yields reverted to their previous elevated levels.
On the other hand, Bitcoin delivered impressive gains, surging to $77,000 and marking its most substantial weekly increase in two years. Market participants appeared to rotate into alternative investments during the equity market turbulence.
