Bitcoin Rallies on Institutional Demand and Treasury's Bond Buybacks

Bitcoin has seen a significant surge in recent days, breaking out of its summer range and reaching a three-month high near $79,500 before settling around $77,000. This move caught the market off guard, with over $4 billion in short crypto positions being liquidated and creating a wave of forced buying as traders rushed to close losing bets.

At the same time, institutional demand for Bitcoin has returned, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracting approximately $1.92 billion in net inflows during the week ended August 21, their strongest weekly result since October 2025. This influx of capital is a sign that investors are starting to view crypto as a viable option and may be looking to diversify their portfolios.

The Treasury's decision to double the maximum size of liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated government securities has also had an impact on Bitcoin's price. While this move was intended to alleviate pressure on long-term government bonds, it has inadvertently strengthened Bitcoin's broader monetary argument and may have contributed to its recent rally.

Legendary macro investor Stanley Druckenmiller has criticized the Treasury's decision, arguing that it is an attempt to suppress a market signal that policymakers should be listening to. He believes that high long-term rates are not a malfunction, but rather information about inflation, fiscal policy, and the supply of government debt.
