Bitcoin Rallies Past $86K Amid $120M in Short Liquidations
Bitcoin reached its highest point since September 23 as prices briefly touched $86,857 on Bitstamp. The rally was driven by short liquidations totaling over $120 million in a 24-hour period, according to CoinGlass data.
The surge above the well-watched sell zone helped propel the price upward, with reduced ask-side liquidity above $85,000 allowing prices to move more efficiently, Glassnode analysis found. However, the report also highlighted that sustained confirmation of the uptrend may depend on renewed momentum in US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows.
Order-book shifts played a key role in triggering the push higher, with TradingView data showing BTC/USD reaching $86,857 before pulling back below $86,000. Glassnode noted that exchange order-book conditions linked the breakout to reduced ask liquidity above the prior barrier.
The rally didn't unfold in a vacuum, with CoinGlass's liquidation heatmap indicating a concentration of potential liquidations above $87,000 after the initial breakout. This amplifies volatility and may lead to further short liquidations if prices continue to rise.
