Bitcoin Rally Depends on Real Demand as Treasury Buybacks Loom

Bitcoin's recent 22% rally has sparked debate about its sustainability. Analysts say the initial boost was largely driven by macro factors, including a shift in U.S. Treasury-market liquidity. However, as the rally continues, it is clear that real demand will be crucial to sustaining this momentum.

Fabian Dori, chief investment officer at Sygnum, notes that Bitcoin's behavior alongside other markets suggests a strong macro component to the initial rally. The combination of cross-asset behavior and crypto-market plumbing indicates that investors seeking hard assets amid renewed concerns about currency debasement drove the move.

However, as the price surge forced traders positioned for further weakness out of the market, it is clear that ETF inflows and spot demand are playing a crucial role in supporting the rally. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drew $1.92 billion during the breakout week, while continued inflows suggest crypto-native demand is beginning to support the move.

With the Treasury's expanded long-term bond buybacks set to begin on September 9, analysts are watching for signs of whether the rally has a durable structural bid. Dori notes that rising long-end yields would suggest that the buybacks are failing to provide the expected support, while weakening ETF flows or tighter dollar funding conditions would remove another source of marginal demand.
