Bitcoin Rally Hits Extreme Greed as Short Squeeze Fuels Breakout Above $80K
Bitcoin has been on a tear since late August, climbing approximately 24% in just over two weeks. The rally hit an extreme level of 'greed' according to the Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index, which measures market sentiment through monitoring volatility, momentum, social media, and Bitcoin dominance.
The index jumped from 36 a month earlier to 81, entering 'Extreme Greed,' as traders rapidly repriced risk. However, this shift in sentiment was short-lived, with more cautious measures showing the risk-on trade had reached a local top before a sharp reversal in risk sentiment.
Analysts warn that the speed of the sentiment shift matters, as bullish positioning has consistently been increasing while profits have been rising. Bitcoin on-chain metrics show unrealized profit margins of 20.5%, and short-term holder whales recorded over $1.2 billion in realized profits between August 20 and 22.
The sudden change in market sentiment is important because it can sustain momentum, but also incentivize selling for profit before a downturn. While extreme levels of greed suggest profit-taking and leverage are ripe, confirmation of the broader reversal can only be made on the price action, physical demand, and positioning rather than the sentiment alone.
