Bitcoin Rally Supported by Real Capital Inflows, but Speculative Activity Rises

Bitcoin's recent surge to near $80,000 has raised questions about its health. According to Glassnode, the on-chain analytics platform, the rally is not just due to low liquidity but is instead supported by real capital inflows.

The platform points out that aggressive buying in spot markets, increased trading volumes, strengthening liquidity, and institutional demand are behind the surge. This suggests that investors are shifting to a more aggressive risk stance, with taker flows in perpetual futures strongly favoring buyers.

However, Glassnode also notes that open positions in futures contracts have expanded to high levels, indicating significant speculative participation and leverage use in the market. Additionally, indicators of 'hot capital' - short-term capital sensitive to price movements - have risen above historical averages.
