Bitcoin rate-relief outlook clouded by US services price surge
September's ISM services prices index climbed to 74.0, marking its highest level since July 2022, even as overall growth in the sector showed signs of slowing. The report, released on October 5, indicated that while business activity and employment saw mixed movements, input costs were rising more widely. The headline services PMI dipped slightly to 54.9 from 55.4, and business activity dropped to 56.5 from 61.7, though both figures remained above the 50-point threshold indicating expansion. Employment, however, improved from 47.8 to 50.1, signaling a return to slight growth after two months of contraction.
The rise in the services prices index has raised concerns about the outlook for Bitcoin, particularly for leveraged positions that may be sensitive to restrictive financing conditions. Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson's remarks on October 1 highlighted upside inflation risks following September's quarter-point rate increase, which brought the federal funds target range to 3.75%-4.00%. The ISM report adds to these concerns by underscoring the persistence of cost pressures, which could delay anticipated rate relief and increase the risk for leveraged Bitcoin traders.
The Bitcoin financing channel remains complex, with perpetual funding rates operating independently of Federal Reserve policies. Historical data suggests that Bitcoin prices do not automatically react to monetary or macroeconomic news. As of October 6, Bitcoin traded near $85,580, reflecting a minor 0.04% decline over 24 hours. The overall market cap stood at $1.72 trillion, with a 24-hour trading volume of $25.46 billion, down 19.77%. Despite these fluctuations, the long-term trend for Bitcoin remains positive, with gains of 37.68% over the past 90 days.
The current market conditions underscore the need for cautious optimism. Slower services expansion alone does not guarantee relief for leveraged Bitcoin positions, as the impact on financing conditions requires further market evidence. Investors should monitor developments in cost pressures, rate expectations, and leveraged demand to assess the potential risks and opportunities in the Bitcoin market.
