Bitcoin Reclaims 50-Week EMA, Traders Eye $80,000 Resistance
Bitcoin (BTC) reclaimed its 50-week exponential moving average (EMA) for the first time since November 2025, marking a significant milestone in its bear-market recovery.
The price of BTC/USD closed last week at $77,727 on Bitstamp, per data from TradingView, surpassing the key resistance trendline that currently sits at $77,752. This has sparked caution among some traders, who point out that prior bear markets saw retests of the 50-week EMA before capitulating into their ultimate macro lows.
Rekt Capital, a crypto trader and analyst, warned that not only the 50-week EMA but the entire area around $80,000 figured as resistance for bulls to overcome. He also noted that each bear market relief rally thus far would retrace sharply in the week following a strong breakout rally.
The price of BTC/USD has been on a tear, reaching its highest levels since mid-May and posting its best August gains in almost a decade. The weekly candle closed above several key price points, including the aggregate cost basis for short-term holders (STHs) at $68,700.
In related news, the US Treasury doubled the size of its debt buyback purchases to $4 billion per operation, sparking a Bitcoin short squeeze that wiped out a record $3.1 billion of crypto short positions over two days. The move has led some commentators to suggest that yield curve control (YCC) is on the horizon.
