Bitcoin Resilience Tested as Oil Surges Above $100
Bitcoin has been holding strong above $78,000 as Brent crude oil breached $100 for the first time since July 24. This surge in energy prices is causing concerns about inflation and interest rates, which could negatively impact Bitcoin.
Data from CryptoSlate shows that Bitcoin is trading around $78,451 at press time, with little sign of pressure spreading to other bond and energy markets. Brent crude touched $100.19 before easing slightly, extending a roughly 25% advance since early August due to attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure.
Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz, pointed out that Brent's move above $100 has sharpened focus on the economic, political, and social consequences of higher US gasoline prices. He also noted the accompanying rise in bond yields, which could make it more difficult for Bitcoin to maintain its current price.
Talos research notes that Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has risen to 0.56, its highest since 2020, while correlations with the Nasdaq 100 and US dollar have fallen close to zero. However, real yields remain elevated, limiting the Fed's ability to respond to economic weakness with aggressive easing.
