Bitcoin Sets 2029 Deadline for Quantum Resistance Amid Growing Threat
Bitcoin developers have published a roadmap to make the network quantum-resistant by December 2029. This goal is ambitious, given that estimates suggest a quantum attack on Bitcoin's cryptography could become possible as early as 2030.
The roadmap outlines four coordinated interventions: BIP-360, SHRINCS, Lifeboat, and Dropkick. These tools are designed to protect the blockchain's infrastructure, validators, private states, and wallets end-to-end.
The development of quantum-resistant cryptography has made significant progress in recent months. A new research paper shared with CoinDesk shows that the computing power needed for a future quantum attack on Bitcoin and Ethereum has already dropped by more than half compared to estimates from just months earlier.
