Bitcoin Slumps as MARA Holdings and Strategy Unload Significant Bitcoin Holdings
Bitcoin's momentum has stalled as it slipped below $64,000 on Monday, down nearly 2% from its weekend highs. The decline follows reports of selling pressure from two prominent crypto-focused companies: MARA Holdings and Strategy.
MARA Holdings, a company that mines Bitcoin, offloaded approximately 23,093 BTC in the first half of the year for $1.627 billion. This sale is part of the company's expanded digital asset management strategy, which allows it to sell both newly mined and existing BTC. MARA used the proceeds from these sales to fund ongoing operations, support growth opportunities, and manage liquidity.
As of June 30, MARA held a significant Bitcoin position of 35,577 BTC, valued at around $2.1 billion based on an average price of approximately $58,524 per coin. Among its holdings, 9,270 BTC were classified under the company's digital asset management strategy.
Strategy, another key player in the crypto space, also reported sales of 1,690 BTC last week, generating around $108.6 million at an average sale price of $64,262 per coin. The proceeds from these sales were used to repurchase shares under Strategy's Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program.
The news comes as both MARA and Strategy shares experienced declines in value. At the time of writing on Monday, MARA was trading at $9.44, down 6.4%, while Strategy's MSTR was trading at $97.70, down 2.2%.
