Bitcoin Smashes Past $70,000 as US Treasury Boosts Liquidity Support
The US Treasury Department's decision to expand buyback operations for longer-dated government securities has fueled expectations of another bullish leg in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin has broken past the $70,000 mark and is now trading above $71,228 after a 7% rally on Wednesday.
The move followed the Treasury's announcement that it will at least double the maximum size of its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated nominal securities to up to $4 billion. This increase in purchases of longer-term bonds, including those in the 10-year to 30-year range, is designed to support market liquidity and place downward pressure on yields.
The improved financial conditions may encourage investors to move toward riskier assets, such as stocks and cryptocurrencies. However, it's essential to note that the buyback program is a liquidity-management measure and not a conventional quantitative easing program.
Bitcoin's technical indicators support the bullish outlook, but they also signal that the rally may be becoming stretched. The Relative Strength Index stands near 72, placing it in overbought territory, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator remains well above both its signal and zero lines.
