Bitcoin Soars Above $80,000, Altcoin Volatility Peaks
Bitcoin has surged above $80,000 after a sharp rise in the cryptocurrency market. This sudden movement caught investors off guard, particularly those who had taken short positions, with $198 million worth of leveraged positions liquidated in the last hour.
The data from Bitcoinsistemi.com shows that $190 million of this consists of short positions.
Bitcoin's rise was accompanied by a surge in altcoins. Ethereum rose 4% to surpass $2,550, while Solana and XRP climbed 7.8% and 4.5%, respectively.
However, it's the altcoins that recorded even stronger percentage gains, with Arbitrum rising by 29%, Near Protocol ($NEAR) by 26%, Uniswap by 20%, and APT by 18%. Jupiter, Worldcoin, and Ether.fi followed, with JUP, WLD, and ETHFI rising by 15.5%, 15.2%, and 15% respectively.
Analysts believe that the rise in altcoins reflects an improvement in investor sentiment due to the SEC's recent efforts to regulate digital assets. The SEC has announced a 'novelty waiver' plan that will temporarily allow tokenized stock trading for the next five years, which analysts see as anticipating a rise in the use of supporting blockchain infrastructure.
