Bitcoin Soars Above $80,000 as Debasement Fears Boost Momentum
Bitcoin's price rose above $80,000 for the first time in over three months on August 25, driven by concerns about a soft US dollar and fears of debasement. This surge marks the cryptocurrency's highest level since mid-May and comes after President Donald Trump called on Congress to pass a bill defining the growing crypto sector.
The move has been fueled by the US Treasury's announcement to buy back more long-dated bonds, which has led to dollar weakness. As a result, investors are seeking safe-haven assets like Bitcoin and gold. Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey Group, noted that this policy shift may indicate a lower tolerance for rising long-end yields among policymakers.
Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, said the Treasury's action is exactly what Bitcoin loves, allowing investors to avoid intervention and maintain value. The debasement trade has also gained traction, with buyers scrambling into physical and digital assets as fears re-emerged.
