Bitcoin Soars as Dollar Weakness Takes Center Stage
Bitcoin's price surged to $72,757 after the US Treasury doubled its long-dated bond buyback ceiling from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. This move compressed yields and triggered a broader risk-on rally tied to the Treasury's expansion of its bond buyback program.
Roughly $3 billion in forced short liquidations amplified the price increase, contributing to Bitcoin's short squeeze cascade. According to VanEck's Matthew Sigel, head of digital asset research, this move reflects Bitcoin acting as a hedge against dollar weakness and US fiscal policy rather than optimism over the CLARITY Act.
Sigel downplays the impact of the crypto market structure bill working through Congress, saying that the rally isn't about the bill's chances of clearing 60 Senate votes. Sigel believes that Bitcoin is one of the best hedges against dollar weakness and notes that academic evidence shows a strong correlation between Bitcoin and US equities during periods of market stress.
