Bitcoin Soars Past $65K as BIP 110 Debate Ratchets Up Hard Fork Risk
Bitcoin's price surged past $65,000 on Friday, reaching an August peak of $65,340 before consolidating below that mark. The cryptocurrency's market capitalization returned above $1.3 trillion due to the marginal daily gain, which capped off a 3.3% weekly rise.
The movement in Bitcoin's price was accompanied by significant liquidations in the derivatives market, with short liquidations topping $30 million for the second consecutive day and long liquidations nearing $8 million. Total crypto liquidations reached $192 million, with short wipes accounting for just under $112 million.
The potential for a hard fork looms large, as the BIP 110 proposal has gained significant attention in recent days. Luke Dashjr, a prominent Core developer, warned that if BIP 110 fails to gain traction, changing Bitcoin's proof-of-work consensus mechanism would be 'the only option.' This stance underscored the growing risk of a potential chain split.
However, some market participants have downplayed the potential negative impact of the CLARITY Act's delay and the BIP 110 debate. Others warn that if miners refuse to activate BIP 110, Bitcoin would effectively become a centralized 'shitcoin,' losing its status as a decentralized network.
