Bitcoin Stalls Near $87K as Crypto Stocks Rally
Bitcoin (BTC) nearly reached $87,000 on Monday, October 5, 2026, coming within $500 of its late-September peak near $87,400 before retreating. The cryptocurrency’s price edged up 0.8% in the last 24 hours, trading around $86,000. This marks the second failed attempt in a week to surpass the late-September high, following a similar move last Wednesday when Bitcoin climbed to around $85,500 after a softer U.S. inflation report.
Crypto-linked large-cap stocks saw gains in early morning trade. MicroStrategy (MSTR) and CRCL each rose about 3% in premarket trading, while Coinbase (COIN) and Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR) gained roughly 2.5%. On Stocktwits, only MSTR saw retail sentiment trending in the ‘bullish’ territory over the past day, with COIN, BMNR, and CRCL all moving in the ‘bearish’ zone.
Among the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, Dogecoin (DOGE) led the gains with a more than 3% increase, trading just below $1.10. Ripple’s XRP (XRP), BNB (BNB), and Zcash (ZEC) each rose between 1% and 2%, while Ethereum (ETH) and Hyperliquid (HYPE) saw smaller gains. Solana (SOL) and TRON (TRX) remained little changed.
Retail sentiment around Bitcoin shifted to ‘neutral’ from ‘bearish’ on Stocktwits, despite caution about its ability to clear the late-September high. Some traders pointed to weakness across weekly, monthly, and three-month charts, while others noted Bitcoin’s historically strong October performance. The cryptocurrency remains down over 2% year-to-date, more than 30% below its record high of over $126,000 seen in October 2025.
