Bitcoin Stands Firm as Oil Prices Surge Amid US-Iran Tensions
Geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran have sent oil prices soaring, but Bitcoin remains steadfast in its value. Oil futures rose nearly 2% to $85.10 after a US attack on an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz. This major oil tanker route has been disrupted since the conflict began six months ago.
The attack drew retaliatory action from Iran, leading to increased prices for WTI crude and Brent oil futures. However, gold fell 0.8% to $4,418 per ounce, and Nasdaq futures slipped 0.5%. Bitcoin, on the other hand, traded near $77,580, largely unchanged since midnight UTC.
Bitcoin's continued outperformance can be linked to strong inflows into spot ETFs and hopes for aggressive intervention by the Fed in the wake of the Treasury's bond buyback program. However, a recent speech by Fed chief Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium raised expectations of an interest rate hike in September.
Some crypto observers continue to call for caution, advising investors to avoid aggressive leverage while macro uncertainty remains high. Vikram Subbaraj, CEO of Giottus exchange, noted that Bitcoin has immediate support near $77,000 and that the $79,400, $80,800 range remains the key resistance zone ahead of the September 4 U.S. jobs report.
