Bitcoin Surges 40% as Investors Flock to Digital Safe-Havens
The price of Bitcoin has surged by 40% since July, and there are several factors contributing to this increase. One reason is the return of positive inflows into Bitcoin ETFs, which buy and hold coins, thus increasing the demand for Bitcoin. In mid-July, these funds were experiencing net outflows of $5.8 billion, but two months later, that had turned into a net inflow of $800 million.
However, this explanation is not entirely satisfying because it's unclear whether ETF inflows are causing the price to rise or if they're simply following suit. Another possible explanation is the 'digital gold' investment thesis, which suggests that Bitcoin can act as a safe-haven asset during times of macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical tension.
Some investors view Bitcoin as a potential hedge against inflation and instability, similar to physical gold. The correlation between Bitcoin and gold recently reached a six-year high. But this explanation is also incomplete because Bitcoin has behaved like both a high-beta tech stock and a safe-haven asset at different times in the past year.
A third possible explanation involves a potential link between recent buybacks of long-term U.S. Treasury debt and the price of Bitcoin. This suggests a feedback loop between the bond market and the crypto market, where lower interest rates make risky assets like Bitcoin more appealing to investors seeking higher returns.
