Bitcoin Surges Above $72,000 Amid Fears of Short-Squeeze Spike

Bitcoin has surged above $72,000 after gaining nearly 15% since Monday, leaving analysts weighing in on its future trajectory. The sudden increase wiped out over $3 billion in bearish bets and saw spot Bitcoin ETFs attract a record $517 million inflow.

Nicolai Sondergaard, Senior Research Analyst at Nansen, attributed the rally to Treasury bond purchases and policy headlines, but warned that much of the gain was driven by liquidations rather than sustained buying. He noted that while the technical picture has improved with Bitcoin reclaiming its 200-day simple moving average around $69,000, the largest risk is that this was a short-squeeze spike, not fresh sustained buying.

Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, echoed Sondergaard's concerns, saying 'the rally may be sustainable if spot demand growth continues after the initial impact of these macro events.' He noted that he is watching Bitcoin's 365-day moving average and CryptoQuant's profit-and-loss index, which have yet to turn bullish.

Adam McCarthy, a researcher at Lo:Tech, attributed the move to the Treasury's expanded buyback program and the short squeeze. He warned that 'the fuel is spent' and that the next leg of the rally will need to be driven by fresh buyers rather than forced covering.
