Bitcoin Surges Above $80K on Bond Buyback and Regulatory Optimism

Bitcoin has surged above $80,000 for the first time since May, reaching a high of $81,237.94 on August 25.

The cryptocurrency is now trading near $78,600, up 28% so far in August and set for its biggest monthly gain since November 2024, according to Reuters.

Multiple factors are driving the rally, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement of expanded bond buybacks to cap long-end yields, which weakened the dollar and made assets like Bitcoin attractive as a hedge against currency debasement.

Regulatory optimism is also lifting sentiment, with President Trump calling on Congress last week to pass legislation bringing clearer definitions to the cryptocurrency sector. Standard Chartered's Geoff Kendrick noted that this type of intervention is exactly what Bitcoin loves, allowing investors to avoid such interventions.
