Bitcoin Surges on SEC Exemption and Oil Price Relief
Bitcoin's price surged by 6% on September 18, breaking through $81,000 after weeks of trading in the $77,000-$78,000 range. The catalysts behind this move were two significant events: the SEC's announcement of a new exemption for tokenized stocks and the decline in oil prices.
The SEC's decision to allow regulated platforms to offer traditional equities as blockchain-based tokens was seen as a major breakthrough. This comes on the heels of the Senate's Clarity Act, which failed to clear the 60-vote threshold needed to advance comprehensive crypto rules. Investors seem to have prioritized the SEC's move over Congress's inaction.
The decline in oil prices also played a crucial role in Bitcoin's price increase. West Texas Intermediate crude oil had pushed above $106 per barrel, fueling inflation anxiety and putting pressure on risk assets. The drop in oil prices suggests that one of the main drivers of inflation may be easing, giving the Fed less reason to continue tightening monetary policy.
The combination of these two factors led to a surge in short liquidations in the derivatives market, with over $200-$250 million in shorts being forced out. This added to the buying pressure and pushed Bitcoin's price higher.
