Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 Amid Global Debt Crisis Fears
Bitcoin's price surged to $80,000 over the past week, driven by concerns about growing fiscal problems and a weakening dollar. According to Bloomberg, this boost was partly due to changes in the bond market following U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement of plans to at least double buybacks of long-term Treasury bonds.
This move lowered bond yields, weakened the dollar, and pushed gold prices higher, renewing investor interest in the debasement trade. The strategy involves rising fiscal tensions and easing financial conditions boosting demand for scarce assets, including Bitcoin.
Mass liquidations of short positions, inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, and expectations of more favorable regulatory conditions in the United States also contributed to the rally. Standard Chartered analyst Geoffrey Kendrick believes that this rise could be self-reinforcing, driven by record liquidations of short positions and over $1 billion in weekly inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs.
