Bitcoin Surges Past $81,000 as Gold Rally Continues
Bitcoin has reclaimed the $81,000 mark as gold continues its rally, driven by a weaker US dollar and shifting Treasury yields. The cryptocurrency's price rose to $81,237.94 before easing towards $80,300.
The recent surge in Bitcoin's value is largely attributed to changes in the US Treasury's bond-buyback program, which has led to increased liquidity-support purchases of longer-dated government securities.
Investors are responding by selling dollars and moving into assets viewed as relatively scarce, reviving the so-called debasement trade. This trend has pushed capital towards alternative stores of value, such as Bitcoin and gold.
The debasement trade is based on the idea that fiscal pressure and policy intervention can weaken confidence in government currencies. Unlike fiat currencies, Bitcoin's issuance follows a fixed schedule, with mining rewards periodically reduced through the halving and total supply capped at 21 million coins.
