Bitcoin Surges Past $85,000 as Uptober Kicks Off
The Bitcoin price has risen above $85,000 for the first time in over four months, reaching as high as $86,600 by the time of writing. This represents a gain of around 13% over the past week.
This development has sparked questions about whether the crypto bear market is finally behind us and if we are entering an uptrend. Analysts point out that the fundamentals have been improving for some time, while the price action has lagged behind.
The latest uptick in demand may be attributed to institutional investors returning to the space. The spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen significant inflows, and the liquidation of short positions has added fuel to the rally. The technical picture is also looking more favorable, with the Bitcoin price closing above its 50-week moving average.
OCTOBER, often referred to as 'Uptober', has historically been a strong month for Bitcoin, with an average gain ranging from 14% to 27%. Looking at the longer-term data, we see that since 2010, October has averaged around +26.8%, while in the period following 2013, it's typically seen gains of between 14-22%. The median value is more conservative, usually sitting around 10-15%.
The Uptober narrative is fueled by a combination of factors, including the fourth-quarter portfolio rebalancing, increased institutional activity, and historical momentum. Macroeconomic conditions such as interest rates, dollar strength, and risk appetite also tend to be more favorable during this period.
