Bitcoin Surges Past $86K on Regulatory Momentum
Bitcoin’s price surged twice above $86,000 on Tuesday, driven by regulatory momentum. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced a proposal for cryptocurrency regulation, following a similar move by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) days earlier. The rally began after a midday sell-off on Monday, which briefly pushed Bitcoin below $85,000. The cryptocurrency then embarked on two upward waves, reaching a peak of $86,450 before consolidating above $86,200.
By 1:15 p.m. EST, Bitcoin had pulled back to around $85,500, maintaining its October gains. The market capitalization neared $1.72 trillion, with modest gains keeping the cryptocurrency in positive territory since its October opening at roughly $83,700. Derivatives data showed a significant reduction in liquidations, dropping from $109 million to $30 million within 24 hours.
The CFTC’s proposal has drawn mixed reactions. While some observers praised the creative framing of the rulemaking, others expressed caution over the lack of clarity on bankruptcy protections for customer assets. Journalist Eleanor Terrett noted that the proposal could cover retail crypto spot trades involving leverage, building on a precedent set by former Acting Chair Caroline D. Pham in 2025.
Looking ahead, Bitfinex analysts highlighted the upcoming consumer price index (CPI) report as a critical test for the ‘Uptober’ narrative. They anticipate Bitcoin’s price will trade between $84,000 and $87,722 this week, with potential downside risks if the price closes below $84,000. Analysts also noted that slower inflows and a later upside resolution could occur if ETF flows remain flat to positive.
