Bitcoin Surges Past $87,000 as Short Squeeze Intensifies
A massive short squeeze in the cryptocurrency market has propelled Bitcoin's price to nearly $87,000. The surge was driven by over $844 million in crypto short liquidations and $535 million from BTC alone, forcing bearish traders to close leveraged positions.
As these short positions were closed, it created a feedback loop where buying pushed the price higher, triggering more liquidations and further fueling the rally. This dynamic has been observed before in other markets, but the sheer scale of this short squeeze is unprecedented.
The recent breakout above $82,000 appears to have triggered this effect, with analysts noting that the move was not solely driven by forced buying. In fact, Coinalyze data shows about $2 billion in new leveraged exposure entering the market since the breakout, suggesting traders are also opening fresh positions as momentum strengthens.
Spot demand has also improved, with Glassnode reporting stronger buying from spot and perpetual markets. Additionally, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have been a source of demand, with Farside Investors reporting $999 million in net inflows on Monday, the largest daily inflow in 11 months.
