Bitcoin Surges Past $87,000 on Institutional Buying and Regulatory Catalysts
Bitcoin briefly reached $87,200 this week before easing back to the $85,000-$86,000 range. The price jump was driven by a combination of factors including institutional fund flows, corporate Bitcoin buying, and regulatory developments in the United States.
The U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw approximately $1.59 billion in net inflows across three trading sessions. This influx of capital helped to create underlying demand for Bitcoin.
Strategy Inc., a corporate buyer, acquired 950 BTC between September 14 and September 20, bringing its total holdings to 846,000 BTC. This purchase was part of Strategy's balance-sheet strategy built around the asset, which can reinforce confidence among investors who view corporate treasury adoption as part of Bitcoin's institutionalization.
The speed of the rally was also amplified by a short squeeze, with roughly $919 million of crypto short positions being liquidated, including more than $557 million linked to Bitcoin. The combination of these factors helped produce one of Bitcoin's strongest daily moves in months.
