Bitcoin Surges Past Gold in Debasement Trade
Bitcoin is emerging as the leading asset in the current 'debasement trade', according to StoneX senior market analyst Fiona Cincotta. She notes that the price of Bitcoin broke above $65,000 on August 19, coinciding with the U.S. Treasury's announcement to increase buybacks of long-dated government bonds.
The breakout was followed by a surge in price, reaching a high of $87,000 this week, a 35% increase from the previous level. Meanwhile, Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of around $4.6 billion over the same period, pushing them into positive territory for the year.
Cincotta stresses that this is not a case of investors abandoning gold, as gold ETF demand has remained strong, with August recording the second-largest monthly global ETF inflows on record.
However, Cincotta believes that the debasement bid in the current market environment favors Bitcoin over gold. She notes that the timing of the Treasury announcement coincided with Bitcoin's breakout and points to stronger ETF inflows and renewed appetite for hard assets as supporting factors.
