Bitcoin Surges to $80,000 Amid Treasury's Bond Buyback Plan
The price of Bitcoin (BTC) briefly touched $80,000 on Monday before retreating. This move followed reports that the US Treasury is considering using its nearly $950 billion Treasury General Account to fund larger buybacks of long-term bonds.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's plan aims to suppress long-term yields by using the TGA funds for bond purchases. However, critics argue that this strategy could weaken the dollar and stoke inflation.
Citadel Securities calls it 'financial repression,' warning of potential negative consequences. Peter Schiff, chief economist at Euro Pacific Asset Management, also expressed concerns, stating that the plan would increase exposure to rising short-term rates and lead to massive QE and runaway inflation.
