Bitcoin Surges to $84,000, 10-Year Gain Hits 13,700% Mark
Bitcoin's price has surged to over $84,000, a far cry from its value a decade ago. In October 2016, Bitcoin traded at $612.13, a price that would seem quaint today. According to CoinCodex historical data, a hypothetical $1,000 investment in BTC at that time would now be worth approximately $138,100, not accounting for fees or taxes. This represents a staggering gain of around 13,700% in just 10 years.
The market's growth is not just about price. Bitcoin's market capitalization has ballooned to around $1.7 trillion, with daily trading volumes exceeding $80 billion. Institutional demand has become a significant factor, with the introduction of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs providing a regulated brokerage route into BTC. This shift is a far cry from the days when Bitcoin was largely traded through specialist crypto exchanges.
The decade-long journey has not been smooth, however. CoinCodex data shows that Bitcoin experienced significant fluctuations, including a 1,357% gain in 2017, followed by a 73% loss in 2018. The price then rebounded with a 300% increase in 2020 and a 59.6% gain in 2021, before falling 64.2% in 2022.
