Bitcoin Surmounts 50-Week Moving Average, Ending Bear Market Hopes
Bitcoin has closed above its 50-week moving average for the first time in over 10 months, potentially signaling the end of the bear market. The cryptocurrency closed at $81,159 on Coinbase on Sunday, surpassing its 50-week moving average of $78,788. This development is significant because the 50-week moving average has historically served as a ceiling during bear markets.
Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy Research, noted that in four out of five completed bear markets, once the 50-week moving average was broken to the upside, the bear market bottom was confirmed. Thorn stated that 'retaking the 50w MA has previously confirmed the end of a bear market.'
However, not everyone is convinced that this signals the start of a bull market. Crypto trader Craig Cobb said he is looking at $83,000 as a key level for Bitcoin, which would indicate a trend reversal.
Others, like Ben Simpson from Collective Shift, believe that a weekly close above the 50-week moving average would be a strong indication of a bull market. Simpson stated that 'Bitcoin gained between 700% and 900% after breaking above the level in 2017, 2020, and 2023.'
Despite this positive development, some analysts caution that one weekly close is not enough to confirm that Bitcoin has reached its cycle bottom.
