Bitcoin Tail Emissions Proposal Sparks Inflation Debate Among Users
Bitcoin developer Peter Todd's proposal to give miners a permanent stream of new bitcoin has sparked controversy among users who see the 21 million supply limit as the asset's most important promise.
The proposal, which involves tail emissions, a fixed number of new coins per block, has been met with resistance from critics who argue that it would introduce perpetual inflation and dilute balances continuously.
Todd argues that this would provide a predictable floor under miner revenue, but critics counter that it would be a wealth tax on savers and recreate fiat central planning with extra steps.
The issue has been ongoing since at least 2022, when Todd first proposed the idea. However, his latest speech has reignited the debate, with some users arguing that the 21 million hard cap is non-negotiable and should remain as a value proposition of Bitcoin.
