Bitcoin Taps $80K on Fears Over Traditional Money, Crypto Regulation Optimism
Bitcoin's price has surged past $80,000 for the first time since May, fueled by two key drivers. The first is a trend known as the 'fiscal-credibility trade,' where investors are seeking assets that maintain their value despite concerns about traditional monetary systems.
The second driver is renewed optimism over US crypto regulation, particularly ahead of the September 15 vote on the CLARITY Act. This legislation has seen its passage odds increase to around 30% from 10%, according to prediction markets.
Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, attributes the rally to a 'turn of the tide' in institutional-credibility concerns, drawing parallels with Bitcoin's reaction to the 2023 Silicon Valley Bank collapse.
Kendrick predicts that either passage of CLARITY or clear SEC guidelines could allow traditional institutions to increase their crypto exposure before year-end. He estimates this potential scale as 'all of crypto remains smaller than Nvidia.'
Standard Chartered still sees Bitcoin reaching $500,000 by end-2030, based on a framework that compares Bitcoin's value to Gold in a two-asset portfolio.
