Bitcoin to Monero Swaps: A Guide to Private Crypto Transfers

Bitcoin and Monero are two cryptocurrencies that solve different problems, but swapping between them is a routine operation that takes minutes. Bitcoin is a transparent ledger where every transaction is publicly available, while Monero conceals sender, receiver, and amount by default. When converting BTC to Monero, you move from an asset that publishes your activity to one that does not.

The key difference lies in how balances are handled. On the Bitcoin network, anyone who knows one of your addresses can trace its full history, while on Monero, ring signatures, stealth addresses, and confidential transactions break this link. This means that while you can't hide your activity completely, it's much harder to track than with Bitcoin.

Custodial exchanges take possession of your Bitcoin, execute the trade on their own books, and let you withdraw after a window where they hold your funds. Non-custodial swaps, on the other hand, do not hold balances for you. You send Bitcoin to a one-time deposit address, the service routes the trade through its liquidity, and Monero is delivered to the specified address.

The mechanics of a non-custodial swap are straightforward: select the pair (Bitcoin in, Monero out), choose a floating or fixed rate, enter the Monero address that will receive the funds, set a refund address, send your Bitcoin to the deposit address, and wait for confirmation. The reverse works similarly if you later want to swap Monero back to Bitcoin.

The costs of swapping between these two cryptocurrencies include service fees and network fees, which vary with congestion. It's essential to read the total quote rather than just the headline percentage, as network fees can exceed the service fee on small swaps during busy periods.
