Bitcoin Trader Faces $23M Short After Losing Millions on Previous Bets
A persistent trader has opened another large short position against Bitcoin, worth over $23 million. This move follows a string of unsuccessful attempts to profit from a decline in the cryptocurrency's price. According to on-chain tracking platform Lookonchain, the trader had previously shorted Bitcoin and Ethereum 14 times within five days, resulting in cumulative losses exceeding $4.5 million.
The recent surge in Bitcoin's price has been attributed to various factors, including the failure of United States bond buybacks to stabilize yields, which has led to a shift in capital towards alternative assets such as Bitcoin and gold. Traditional stock markets have also faced selling pressure, contributing to the rise in demand for Bitcoin.
Despite the trader's repeated losses, Bitcoin remains relatively stable around $77,000, with some market participants suggesting that this stability could be due to investors locking in profits after the sharp price increase. The cryptocurrency's ability to maintain its recent gains will depend on broader market sentiment and new economic data.
