Bitcoin Traders Load Up Above $78k as Options Market Shifts
Bitcoin's options market is seeing significant activity ahead of the Federal Reserve's September 16 decision, with traders loading up on calls above $78,000 and hedging against a drop to $60,000. The end-of-September options expiry holds 130,670 BTC of open interest, more than double the August figure of 79,003 BTC.
According to DWF Labs market insights lead Martin Lee, most of this increase is due to routine quarterly positioning rather than a concentrated bet on the Fed's decision. Lee found that the top five strikes account for 31% of September's open interest, similar to December and March expiries.
The market has quietly repriced its own risk, with calls now trading 0.97 volatility points richer than puts. This shift is partly due to US-traded spot Bitcoin ETFs taking in a record $1.92 billion last week, giving traders a clear demand-side reason to chase the call bid.
However, some caution is warranted when interpreting these numbers. The September expiry's largest call sits at $70,000 with 11,308 contracts, which could be seen as bullish until considering that Bitcoin already trades 9.8% above this level, making the position deep in the money.
