Bitcoin Trapped Between $80k Ceiling and Rate Hike Uncertainty
Bitcoin's price has been stuck in a range between $80,000 and $82,000 for some time now. Three key dates could help resolve this situation: September 10th, when U.S. weekly jobless claims are released; September 11th, when the consumer price index (CPI) for August is published; and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 15-16, where the rate decision will be made.
The direction of risk has shifted in recent times. For most of the past two years, the debate was about the speed of cuts, but now it's whether rates go up or not. The federal funds target sits at 3.50% to 3.75%, and futures pricing implied a 65.2% chance the Fed would hold there against a 34.8% odds of a hike to 3.75% to 4.00%. However, this balance has since flipped with fed funds futures assigning roughly 57% probability to a hike at the September meeting.
Bitcoin's price action has been closely tied to Fed decisions in the past. Of the 2026 FOMC decisions through August, three marked clear bearish pivots for Bitcoin, with roughly $300 million to $500 million in mostly long positions liquidated around each announcement.
