Bitcoin Treasury Companies' Buy-High Sell-Low Strategy Falls Flat

Instruments

Bitcoin treasury companies are under scrutiny due to their strategy of buying high and selling low. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), sold Bitcoin at an average price of $60K in June and July before buying it back at $80K on August 31. This strategy only makes sense if the price of Bitcoin is rising.

The company needed to sell some of its Bitcoin to fund ongoing operations and make payments on preferred stock offerings, resulting in selling low. If the price of Bitcoin was declining or trading sideways during this period, their strategy would not have worked.

Strategy's performance is not an isolated case, as many other Bitcoin treasury companies are struggling. Some trade for less than the combined value of their Bitcoin holdings, while others are winding down operations or pivoting into other areas like AI.
