Bitcoin Tumbles as Fed Hikes Rates for First Time in Years
The Federal Reserve has made its first rate hike in years, increasing the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4.00%. This move was met with a decline in Bitcoin's value, dropping to an intraday low of $75,242 on the Bitstamp exchange.
The central bank cited stubborn economic pressures as the reason for the rate hike, including persistently high inflation and producer prices. The Federal Open Market Committee's median forecast predicts one additional 25-basis-point rate hike before the end of 2026 to bring inflation under control.
This tightening of the economy is a headwind for digital assets like Bitcoin, which was already struggling due to the failure of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in Washington. The lack of institutional confidence and legislative stagnation have left Bitcoin vulnerable to rising interest rates.
