Bitcoin Tumbles as Senate Rejects Clarity Act Amid Fed Rate Hike Fears
Bitcoin prices sank below $76k on Wednesday as investors digested the US Senate's rejection of the Clarity Act, a regulatory bill aimed at establishing a broader framework for cryptocurrencies in the United States.
The act, which had been championed by the Donald Trump administration, faced opposition due to disagreements over its treatment of insider trading and stablecoin yield payments. The 49-50 vote against progressing the bill into law sent shockwaves through the crypto market, with Bitcoin falling 1.8% to $75,893.1.
Crypto proponents, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, argue that US regulators could still create comparable regulations for crypto without Congressional approval. However, such regulations would be vulnerable to changes in the political climate and administration.
The Federal Reserve's upcoming decision also weighed on crypto prices, with investors bracing for potential rate hikes amid rising Treasury yields. Higher rates are seen as a negative for cryptocurrencies, which are considered risk-heavy assets.
