Bitcoin Tumbles Below $79K Amid Rising Rate Hike Odds

Friday's US jobs report came in stronger than expected, adding 162,000 new positions in August, triple the projected number of 55,000-58,000. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%. This data sent shockwaves through financial markets, with Bitcoin plummeting below $79,000 after being rejected at $82,400.

The Federal Reserve gained more leeway to combat inflation due to the strong labor market, causing rate hike odds to surge over 50%. However, this is a double-edged sword for risk assets. Strong economic data can be seen as negative news when paired with high inflation, making it less likely that investors will take on risk.

According to The Kobeissi Letter, the system is 'broken' when stocks fall despite an unexpectedly strong jobs report. This phenomenon is attributed to higher interest rate expectations pushing Treasury yields and the dollar up, tightening financial conditions and reducing investor appetite for risk assets.

Bitcoin analyst Adam Livingston disagrees with this short-term perspective, arguing that persistent inflation, rising debt, and the monetary response will ultimately strengthen BTC's long-term value proposition. He believes that while higher rates may pressure Bitcoin in the short term, they won't solve the structural problems it was designed to address.
