Bitcoin Tumbles with Oil Prices as Geopolitical Tensions Rise
Bitcoin has retreated to the $83,000 range due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The flare-up of hostilities between Iran and the US drove international oil prices higher, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rising approximately 1% to $93.28 per barrel. This surge in energy prices fueled concerns about a resurgence in inflation, pushing U.S. Treasury yields higher.
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.20%, its highest level since 2007. Higher interest rates reduce the relative appeal of non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, creating a structural headwind for digital asset prices. According to CoinGecko, Bitcoin was trading at $83,086, down 1.6% from 24 hours earlier.
Risk assets broadly weakened in sympathy, with Nasdaq futures falling 0.7%. However, Bitcoin has gained approximately 42% over the past three months, delivering the highest returns among major assets including the Nasdaq and gold over the same period.
